Chicago Therapist Liz Suran

Hello and Welcome

My name is Liz Suran. I am a clinical therapist specializing in depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, self-image issues, and life transitions.

Whatever it is that brings you to therapy at this time in your life, I believe it is an opportunity for enrichment by gaining greater self-knowledge.

It takes courage to sort through confusion and pain, and in our collaborative work you can find meaning and hope. I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Please review this site to learn more about my counseling approach.

Approach

I practice humanistic therapy in which a respectful relationship is most important. A safe environment is essential to exploring issues that can be difficult to address, and I dedicate myself to empathic and accurate listening in our collaborative work. I have a strong belief in the value of each individual and I practice from the conviction that each person inherently has the resources and desire to live a healthy and fulfilling life. I am committed to helping my clients achieve positive growth in line with the goals that they have for therapy.

Painful emotional experiences can create distorted and damaging self-perceptions. I see therapy as an opportunity to modify these messages and establish healthier life patterns. Current distress offers the chance to develop healthier coping skills and a more accurate self-understanding that enhance future experiences and relationships.

I believe that we are responsible for our lives, which can be both empowering and frightening. Life is complex and unpredictable, constantly offering chances to grow and to learn. We always have choices in life, and therapy is an opportunity to become more intentional and thoughtful in the choices that we make.

My approach is integrative, which means I bring knowledge from various modalities in which I’ve been trained such as family systems, existential, experiential, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral; but most of all, I am humanistic and relationship-oriented. I think that the counseling relationship is most important in which one person is connecting to another. It’s important to establish a genuine relationship, and you should feel supported and understood, as well as challenged in a safe environment.

Background Therapist Chicago

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I received my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from DePaul University. My graduate work included theoretical training in multiple approaches with a heavy concentration on the development of clinical skills.

My research centered on eating disorders, studying the association between eating and the struggle for identity. This issue, far more common than most people realize, remains a special interest to me. My work with these clients focuses on a shift from patterns of self-abuse, loathing and deprivation to forgiveness, acceptance, and self-care. Our goal is to return to, or perhaps for the first time experience, a liberated and full participation in life.

After a number of years in clinical practice, heading the family program at a chemical dependency treatment center and facilitating family reunification in the child welfare setting, I received advanced training in Marriage and Family Therapy at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. My clinical experience and academic training in couples and family therapy have solidified both a great appreciation for family systems and an integrated approach to this work.

I have worked in a variety of clinical environments, including a community mental health center, group home, recovery home, child welfare agency, and private practice. My professional experience has included work with children and adolescents, abuse and neglect, trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, relationship struggles, depression, work stress, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and body-image issues.
